Ghana Hosts World Tourism Forum in October

Ghana has been selected to host the World Tourism Forum - Africa Summit 2017.

The October 10 event will be the first time an African country is hosting it. Ghana has fast become a tourism hub especially within the West African sub-region and the Summit is to further consolidate that status.

At a Press Launch of the event at Kempinski Gold Coast City Hotel where the Summit will later take place, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Mr. Akwasi Agyemang said he was elated the Ghana could "score another first as country" and that it is like "hosting the world cup of tourism events in Ghana".

He stated that the country will take advantage to showcase whatever we have and there is no doubt in my mind that it will be successful event. He indicated that a Local Organizing Committee had already been constituted to ensure that the country organizes a momentous event.

The World Tourism Forum - Africa Summit is expected to attract over 40 distinguished speakers from across the globe. More than 40 international bloggers will also be in attendance and according to the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Hon. Mrs. Catherine Afeku, "this is a chance to put the tourism and hospitality of Ghana on the global scale and have the country on the minds of people".

The Minister whose engagements with the Turkey based organization earlier this year, culminated in the Ghana securing the hosting right is particularly thrilled that the Summit will give opportunity for visitors to see the country while creating businesses for the local economy. She sees it as "an avenue to unite as a people", as different people from different parts of the world converge through the power of tourism.

The Summit has already received a presidential backing of the government of Ghana with the President, Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo signing a Letter of Patronage. Former UK Home and Foreign Secretary, Jack Straw is also expected to address the Summit.

A Representative of the World Tourism Forum, Emre Caliskan said the Summit is to highlight the prospects of African Tourism while creating the platform for business linkage.

"As World Tourism Forum we believe that Africa Summit, will develop tourism potential of Ghana and also will highlight the investment gaps of the region. Africa stands to be the next great driver of global demand and growth. Africa has enormous infrastructure gaps to fill and those gaps themselves represent great opportunities", he said.

He is optimistic the Summit will provide networking opportunities to attendees, CEOs from leading companies to better know each other and exchange opinions. He added that, "as a crucial event in the business world to promote new partnerships, the Africa Summit will help industry leaders share their insights regarding global tourism developments".

Highlights of the Summit include a Plenary Session which shall be opened by President Akufo-Addo. The event will also explore topics such as The Political Impacts of Tourism in Africa Region, The Take-Off of Social Media in Tourism, Heading to the Limitless Era: E-Tourism, with a Ministerial Meeting which will be hosted by Tourism Minister of Ghana is also scheduled to take place.

There will be exhibition of local tourism products and services and a two-day tour of the country by participants will wrap the four-day event.
