Exhibitors at Meetings Africa 2017 Gear Up for Sustainability

Meetings Africa 2017 will focus on the importance of sustainability and in preparation for the tradeshow, the South Africa National Convention Bureau (SANCB) partnered with the non-profit organisation, Event Greening Forum (EGF), to host a "green" training session.

The half-day training was conducted at the Sandton Convention Centre on the 16th November 2016 with the objective of providing exhibitors and suppliers with the "top ten easy ways to address greening".

EGF advocates for the importance of incorporating sustainability principles in the events sector and aims to promote South Africa as a "green" destination for a broad range of business events.

EGF training events are based on the world caf sessions format also known as the well-known "Pecha Kucha" format which keeps presentations by multiple speakers concise, fast-paced and fun. Expert presenters prepare 5-minute PowerPoint presentations intended to not only inspire, but provoke further interest and debate.

Some highlights from the presenters include: Leading provider of carbon management and offsetting services Climate Neutral Conferencing and Events, brought the issue of global warming and offsetting carbon emissions to life with a punchy presentation sharing images of the melting Upsala Glacier in Patagonia, Argentina in 1928 and then in 2004.

Environmental solutions business SmartMatta, introduced Environmental Economics to the exhibitors; particularly the development of a circular economy where durable goods are repaired rather than replaced and biological materials are managed and returned to the biosphere. An economy where there are no landfills.

The Geneva based innovative meetings and events management company, MCI, discussed the brown issues of sustainability. That is the People element of triple bottom line: People, Planet, and Profit, highlighting the gravity of the situation in Europe.

Each presenter facilitated a World Cafe discussion table with participating Meetings Africa 2017 exhibitors and suppliers who were then tasked with providing a 1-minute summary of the top 3 key points as well as tangible outcomes.

Pascale Prinsloo from Tourvest Incentives Meetings Events was one of the participants at the EGF training session. When asked why she took time out of her demanding work schedule to attend she said; "The greening forum is a great platform to stay up to date with industry trends. As we will be exhibiting at Meetings Africa 2017, the valuable insight gained from the EGF will assist us in responsibly and sustainably showcasing our brand at this world class exhibition."

Organiser EGF Chairman, Justin Hawes hopes that this training has enabled participants to be better informed of the many sustainable solutions in the business of events and meetings.

Meetings Africa 2017 will take place from 27th February to 1st March 2017 at the Sandton Convention Centre, Johannesburg, South Africa.
