NTDC needs a proactive director general - Salami

As the search for the replacement of the recently sacked director general, Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC), Sally Mbanefo continues.

An astute stakeholder in the travel and tourism industry, Mr. Olumuyiwa Salami who is the Group Managing Director, Dvine Tour Brokers and incumbent Publicity Secretary, National Association of Nigerian Travel Agencies (NANTA) has advised the Federal Government to look beyond the ethnic or political sentiments in appointing a credible and resourceful person as the new director general of Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC).

This was disclosed in a brief chat with Travelscope Magazine in Ibadan recently.

Salami said with the dwindling price fall in the oil sector globally and the ongoing recession in Nigeria, tourism is one of the key ways for the country to bounce back economically.

He said Nigeria is richly blessed and have what it takes to make the country a preferred destination in the continent.

"I must confess, this is the time to get it right in the tourism sector, the appointment of the incoming director general should not be politicalised. We need a professional and a great technocrat for that important position. Sentiment apart, someone like Ikechi Uko who has been championing the course of tourism promotion in Nigeria should not be underestimated", Salami said.

Salami stated further, Ikechi is a one man NGO who has been placing the name of the country on tourism map in Africa through his selfless and well organised events like Abuja Bantaba, Africa Travel Awards and Akwaaba African Travel Market in the last 12 years. A highly experienced and respected tourism expert who also serves as consultant to many countries in Africa on tourism matters.

"Having personally known that Ikechi has great passion for the tourism advancement of the country rather than selfish business interest like others, he will surely take NTDC and the country tourism prospects beyond a higher level if appointed", Salami concluded.
