Ilora Day 2016 set the ancient town agog

Ilora is an ancient town that has metamorphosed into an urban and metropolitan town in Oyo state due to her stability over the ages.

Historical facts and records showed that Ilora was founded by a famous hunter called Akibio between 15th and 16th centuries, settled at a place called Igbo-oro now at the back of the present location of Akibio palace.

In celebration of the town, all sons and daughters of Ilora land both home and diaspora, their descendants, families, friends, well-wishers gathered for the annual event to celebrate another blissful "Ilora Day 2016" and the launching of N100 million development appeal fund at Akibio Secondary School ground, Oke-Isanmi, Ilora on Saturday, November 12, 2016.

Welcoming the guests, Chairman, Ilora Day 2016 Planning Committee, Comrade Kadiri Wasiu reiterated the fact that it is on record that Ilora has witnessed unparalleled development within short time that His Royal Majesty, Oba Stephen Olufemi Oyeniyi, Oparinde II came to the throne as Akibio of Ilora.

Kadiri commended the wife of the Executive Governor of Oyo State, Chief Mrs. Florence Ajimobi for the provision of health centre in Ilora as one of the beneficiary of her Access to Basic Health Care programme for free health care.

In the same vein, he lauded the Executive Governor of Oyo State, Senator Isiaka Ajimobi on the newly created Local Council Development Areas (LCDA) and having Ilora as one of the headquarters. "May I used this forum to appeal to you all to support our town for the smooth take off of our LCDA in terms of provision of infrastructures and other logistics for the headquarters", Kadiri said.

The Chairman, Ilora Development Association, Deacon Kayode Ajayi charged invited guests and indigenous of the town to come together to take Ilora to a greater height irrespective of social, economic and religious diversities.

Ajayi appealed for financial support in realization of the N100,000 million development appeal fund for the transformation of the town.

"The new Divisional Police headquarters in the town that was commissioned by the former Commissioner of Police Oyeboade was made possible from part of the proceed of Ilora day 2015", Ajayi hinted.

In his goodwill remarks, Chief Adegboyega Mabinuori, Are Latoosa of Ibadanland seeks for cooperation of all indigenous with the Akibio of Ilora, Oba Stephen Olufemi Oyeniyi as a way to further hasten development of the ancient town.

He advised all eminent personalities to come to the town for the establishment of industries as the royal majesty, Akibio of Ilora will be glad to support such moves.

"The story of Yorubaland is not complete without mentioning Ilora as the 12th Aare Ona Kakanfo, Aare Obadoke Iyanda Latoosa was from Ilora", Chief Mabinuori concluded.

Earlier, Akibio of Ilora, His Royal Majesty, Oba Stephen Olufemi lauded the initiatives of Senator isiaka Ajimobi in the running of the state affairs and on the creation of the new Local Council Development Areas.

Speaking on the leadership qualities of Alaafin of Oyo, His Imperial Majesty, Oba (Dr) Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III, the monarch, Oba Oyeniyi described Alaafin as someone who had special interest in the affairs of Ilora town generally.

"Oba Adeyemi is always ready to assist in whatever problem Ilora is facing. He has always showing interest in the affairs of our town", he added.

The monarch said "there is mutual understanding between Alaafin, himself and the entire people of Iloraland." He described Alaafin as "the father of all of us in the town."

Advising the parents with sound of a warning note to the youths in the town, Oba Oyeniyi implored all parents to take proper care of their children and advised the youths in the town to desist from the bad habit of involving in smoking of marijuana.

Oba Oyeniyi said the rate at which the youths are smoking marijuana is getting out of hand and he will not hesitate to keep inviting the law enforcement agents for the arrest the culprits. He warned that no parents should come to him if their parents were apprehended or caught in the shameful act.

The monarch expressed gratitude to God for protection of the people of the area in the last one year and acknowledged the cooperation of the religious leaders both the Christian, Muslim and traditional leaders since he came to the throne.

Oba Oyeniyi also showered encomium on all his chiefs for good counsel and mutual relationship with special thanks to the Akinrogun of Iloraland and a veteran broadcaster, Chief Bamiji Ojo who was also at the ceremony.

Oba Oyeniyi described Chief Ojo as a reliable and hard working son of the land who should be commended for his contributions to the progress and development of Iloraland.

At the launching of the N100 million development appeal fund, the family of Aribisa in Ilora donated 2 hectares of land worth N4 million to the town and presented the signed documents on the land.

The Special Guest of Honour and the chairperson, Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, Senator Monsurat Sunmonu donated N100,O00 and promised to renovate a classroom for the establishment of an ICT centre with 5 computers within few days.

Senator Sunmonu buttressed Oba Oyeniyi point as she advised the youths to imbibed self-control and stay clear of illicit drug habit. She said the ICT Centre when opened will be used for their training as a way to enhanced their ability, computer literate to be more focused and aspires for greatness.

The Deputy Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Chief Adebayo Adelabu (Penkelemesi) and Member, Federal House of Representative, Hon. Prince Akeem Adeyemi are among the key donours at the event.

The highlight of the day was the drawing of the raffle tickets where the winner of the star prize of a brand new motorcycle donated by a member of Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon. Leke Oyatokun emerged.

Senator Sunmonu while presenting the key of the motorcycle to the winner, Mr. Idowu Kayode congratulated him and advised to ride with safety as his priority.

In his words, Mr. Kayode thanked the organisers for the transparency and the good conduct of the raffle draw. He prayed for the greatness of the town.

Another lucky winner at the raffle draw, Oluwatoyin Abiodun who won a telephone set commended the Ilora Day 2016 team and said she was happy to be announced as a winner.

Shortly before the closing ceremony, winners of the Quiz/Debate; Table Tennis and Ayo Olopon held during the one week long programme were presented with various prizes while various cultural dancers performed to the admiration of the guests.
